PUBLIC HEARING: A public hearing has been scheduled on Rep. Tim Mahoney (D-Fayette)’s open-records bill (HB 443: an “Act requiring certain records of the State & its political subdivisions, authorities & agencies & other public bodies to be open for examination, inspection., etc., establishing the Office of Access to Public Records, etc., & making a repeal.”) before the State Government Committee on Tuesday, August 7th from 10 am to 3 pm in Room G-50 of the Irvis Office Building.
Here are a few quotes made recently that we should all keep in our minds when the legislature returns in September:
“I just think it’s a little jump-start to get the bill in front of the whole House. I dare one of those legislators to vote against it, because I’ll be ready to fight then.” Rep. Tim Mahoney, said of the hearing on his bill.
“[Senator Pileggi’s spokesman Erik] Arneson said the top priority for Pileggi this fall is revising the state’s open records law to expand public access to government records at every level.”
“It is my intention to have a vote on open records as soon as possible upon our return.”
House Majority Leader Bill DeWeese (D-Greene)
“We need to make the list of exceptions as narrow and as clear as possible.” Senate Majority Leader Dominic Pileggi (R-Delaware)
“When government has trained itself to believe that the risks from openness are substantial, while the risks from keeping secrets are negligible, you begin to get the kind of government nobody wants – a government that believes its job is to do all the thinking for us.”
Tom Curley, president and CEO of the Associated Press
“The issue isn’t really how much Penn State pays Joe.
It is instead the principle of the people’s right to know.”
The Bard of Avondale
