Primary Elections

Tomorrow is Primary Election Day in Pennsylvania. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. In the primary, voters will choose their parties’ candidates in county, municipal, and school board races. While we wouldn’t tell you for whom to vote, we do ask you to pay attention to your local candidates’ views on the issues, including access to government. What are they saying about these issues in your community? More importantly, how have they acted in the past? Do your local government officials keep most meetings open to the public? Or do they regularly hold long “private” meetings with little or no public explanation? Your decisions on Tuesday are a critical first step in determining how open or closed your local governments will be for years to come.
In the primary, voters will also select up to two nominees for the Pennsylvania Supreme Court and two for the Pennsylvania Superior Court. You can find the League of Women Voters Guide on the judicial candidates here. The question asked by the League was “What does the phrase “judicial independence” mean to you? The answers are interesting. Take a look. And don’t forget to vote.
